Synopsis: A hundred years after catastrophic shifts in tectonic plates caused most of its area to submerge, Japan now thrives as a maritime nation. High functioning cities line the coasts of Japan, and well developed sea routes are defended by specialized naval ships. The marine industry is flourishing, and young girls are eager to join the Blue Mermaids—highly skilled women who devote their lives to protecting the seas.
After some time apart, childhood friends Akeno Misaki and Moeka China are reunited at Yokosuka Girls’ Marine High School. Here they are joined by others who share their dream of becoming Blue Mermaids. Soon, training exercises commence, with Akeno and Moeka being put in charge of their own ships and crew. Everything is progressing smoothly for Akeno as she settles into her role as captain and builds camaraderie between her fellow crew members aboard the Harekaze, a destroyer ship. However, unexpected engine and navigation failures soon leave their ship stranded and the crew in danger.
High School Fleet follows the Harakaze’s valiant crew as they navigate treacherous waters and other obstacles on their quest to become fully fledged Blue Mermaids. (MAL)

Haifuri is about highschool girls operating old warships of japan. From the simple premise, you might think that this might be Kantai Collection. Nope. Its better than Kaintai Collection. Why? Cuz of the story, it has substance and direction.

At first glance, the series seemed to be a slice of life about girls learning/studying to become Blue Mermaids. Even me, I thought it was that, but that permise/idea got thrown out of the window when the 2nd half of the freakin’ first episode happen. I was so shocked, I didn’t even notice my mouth was open the whole time. It was thrilling and mind-bending. WTF just happen??? How come an anime about cute girls become an action flick. It was…DAMN.

The change of genre was very unexpected, but it actually added more spice and charm to this simple anime. I really really like how the story was intact until the very end, and it kept me on the edge of my seat waiting for the epic warship action scenes that gives me eyegasms. I don’t see any problems with the pacing and the worldbuilding, you can get the gist of it all after the first episode. I do feel a bit meh during the slice-of-life segments of the series, some of them were a bit unnecessary.

The character. So many!! But even so, I like them all. Unfortunately, the series can give everyone enough spotlight, but atleast they tried to do it though. I really really like the main character, Misaki. She’s very likeable, and her growth throughout the series was amazing. I really really like seeing her commanding the whole fleet, I want her to be my captain too (if I ever..). I also love Mashiro. Even though I’m not a fan of her archetype, I really really like it whenever her personality would clash with Misaki’s. Its’ very realistic and their pairing is very shippable.

Hehehhehhe. I also love Kouko. I especially love her interactions with Wilhemina, their dynamic was really great. Another shippable ship. Heheheheh. I didn’t see much of Misaki’s bff, China, I wish I had seen more.

For the art & animation, the art looked generic and typical for a slice-of-life anime about cute girls. The animation though, especially during the action scenes, SPLENDID. I do admit, it was kinda awkward to see it in 3D, but the movement plus the intensity of the situation covered the flaws of the 3D animation. I’m no expert of warships so I can’t really say much, but I will still express how much I love the fight scenes. The strategies behind those movements was amazing to watch. Even though Harekaze was about to give up, it always pull through in a reasonable and understandable way. I just loved it.

Overall, this series is amazing. I can’t stop replaying the clashes between warships scenes, its that thrilling and amazing. This series was really unexpected and watching this is definitely worth it. I recommend this to everyone.

That is all.

Thanks for reading!

PS: I desperately want a 2nd season of this series. It felt like everything that just happened in the series was just the first arc of their main story. I WANT MORE.

  1. This was a series that interested me because it involves the ocean ahaha. I’m not into the moe genre or cute girls doing cute thing very much. This series flew under the radar a bit but good to know you really enjoyed it. Great overall review of this series and I’ll give a shot sometime 🙂

    1. I am quite a fan of the moe genre, but im mostly bored on the moe scenes in this series, its not like they are bad or anything, I just find them a bit laid back and kinda boring compared to the action scenes. Hehehhehehe 😀
