I was rearranging my anime collection when I stumbled unto this anime. I remember watching this 2 years ago, but I forgot how it ended. Dunno if me forgetting the ending indicates I forgot the anime ending or it might be because I wasn’t able to finish watching this anime. So I decided to rewatch this and maybe, give a probably a proper review.
ESCHA & LOGY NO ATELIER: TASOGARE NO SORA NO RENKINJUTSUSHI

Synopsis: This world has gone through many Dusks, and is slowly nearing its end. Within this world, in the western reaches of the “Land of Dusk,” there was a nation that prospered thanks to its use of alchemy.
There, in order to survive the eventual arrival of the “Dusk End,” the people devoted their efforts to rediscover and recreate lost alchemic technologies. Rediscovered technology from the past era was gathered in the alchemy research city known as “Central,” where research was conducted on how to halt the advance of the twilight.
One of the heroes is a young man who researched alchemy in Central, the other a girl living in a small town on the frontier. This girl’s name is Escha. In the process of using her knowledge of ancient alchemy to help others, she was assigned to the Development Department. The young man’s name is Logy. Having learned the newest alchemic techniques in Central, he requested a transfer to this understaffed town to make use of his abilities, and meets Escha when he is assigned to the Development Department as well. The two make a promise to use their alchemy together, and bring success to the Development Department. (MAL)
My Thoughts:
When I first watched this anime two years ago, I honestly find this anime kinda boring and stagnant. After all, I was watching a lot of mainstream and big animes at that time (Re:Zero, Bungou Stray Dogs, Mob Psycho 100, and more). I wasn’t able to appreciate this anime and miss the opportunity to enjoy every bit of this series. Thank God I rewatched this.
The anime is about Escha, an aspiring alchemist, and Logy, a young man from the Central who recently transferred to the Development Department, as they embark on a journey in helping their branch and the people using alchemy. The core theme of the story focuses on the fact that we should not give up on our dreams no matter what. Its very simple but very powerful.
There was no amazing plot or grandiose event that would happen in the later episodes, this series was just simple and easy to watch. The world building was really good. I liked how they consistently show and backed up the background plot that the world is dying. But I can’t helped but questions some absurd happenings in the story. I think the reason why this anime felt like that, cuz it was originally a game. If you are a fan of the game or familiar with it, definitely, you would enjoy this. No wonder the animation and how the characters react to some happenings tend to feel a bit generic and too common. Maybe if it was animated a little bit well and had a better script, I might consider this anime as an above-average tier ‘originally a game’ type of anime.
The characters were likeable, yeah, but most of them were boring. For me, only Wilbell & Escha lightened up this show. Every time they are shown in the screen, I can’t helped but crack a smile on my face. They are bright and so fun. I wish they dived into Wilbell’s background more. With her, the only magic-user, it would be fun knowing why she’s the only one and why she became a witch in the first place. But yeah, there was a chance her backstory was kinda not connected to the ‘main story’ of the series. Now, for Escha, I love her. I love her character. I love her carefree and optimistic personality. I think the only fault I could find from her was her voice, it was annoying. There were times it felt like her voice was trying to keep up the high tone as long as possible, to a point it felt ‘uuugggghhhh’ in my ears. The others, well, they are there, they are serving their purpose on the story. I’m definitely disappointed with Logy, he was supposed to be the 2nd lead character of the story along side with Escha. I mean, he has his name in the title, and yet he was too bland and generic for a main characters. I do like his interactions with Escha, and its kinda clear they both have hots for each other. Well, the anime was not labeled romance, so the genre was mostly in the background and for the viewers.
The character design was really nice. It does gives off a game vibes with their clothes and the style. Each and everyone had a distinct style, its nice to look at. I also like the fact that all the important characters doesn’t look like they look foreign in their own land with their looks. The animation was….average at best. It doesn’t look good but it doesn’t look bad. The character sometimes look a bit sticky and stiff in their movements, but I don’t mind. The blending of the background art and the characters sometimes don’t match, but its not that bad. I have a feeling that the anime followed all the art and animation of the game, which were both good and bad thing. Good, in a sense that they followed the original. Bad, cuz the anime looks too generic and not much creative freedom in it.
One of the things I love about this anime was the sound and music. Both the opening and ending songs were really good. I usually skip most of the OP and ED after the 1st episode, but in this anime, I couldn’t skip it. The overall sound of the anime added a lot of colour and flavour to the story. It made the anime not too boring and stagnant. The music definitely reminds me a lot of Game Soundtracks on some adventure games I use to play when I was young. Its really good.
Overall, this anime was enjoyable to watch, but I don’t think everyone would like this one. Its not flashy and interesting, but it does gives off positive vibes after watching. I’ll only recommend this to people who already played the game or familiar with it, and to people who just want to waste their time and watch something.
