“Watashi wo Tsukuru no wa Watashi / Zenzen Okiagarenai SUNDAY” by ANGERME

Reading Time: 5 minutes

Oh man, it’s been awhile since my last music review.

For today, I will be giving my thoughts about the latest single of ANGERME, “Watashi wo Tsukuru no wa Watashi / Zenzen Okiagarenai SUNDAY”.

This single was released late last year, November 20, 2019. It is the 27th single of the group and it features the newest member, Hashisako Rin.

  • Watashi wo Tsukuru no wa Watashi (私を創るのは私)
  • Zenzen Okiagarenai SUNDAY (全然起き上がれないSUNDAY)
  • Totte Oki no Oshare wo Shite (とっておきのオシャレをして; Do Your Best) – Katsuta Rina
  • Myouban, Galaxy Gekijou de (明晩、ギャラクシー劇場で; Tomorrow Night, at the Galaxy Theater)

Watashi wo Tsukuru no wa Watashi

I like the song, but its not their best song.

Personally, I find the song really generic and very common. Don’t get me wrong, I like the song, but its very forgettable. From its instrumental to its melody in different sections, I had heard them before. It’s still catchy though, at least.

I really like the incorporation of strings in the instrumentals as it made the song better. The verses melody reminds me of the D.N.Angel anime’s OP, I dunno why. I especially love the refrain, because of its distribution of lines. It highlights the voices of some of the members and I love that. For the chorus…its okay. It’s a bit cheesy, but it works, I guess. The coda is my least favorite part of the song as it sounded a bit out of place. Good thing the instrumental bridge saved it.

In terms of vocals, the usual members got enough parts to highlight their vocal capabilities. I am very happy to hear Layla’s voice as I liked it ever since I heard her voice in the previous single. I am abit disappointed that Rin and Haruka’s voice were not really featured much other than hearing them along with other members. I do understand as both are the weakest link of the group in terms of vocals. I do hope they’ll grow in the future.

Now for MV, its cute.

It had a storyline, introducing the new members. Other than Rin, Oota Haruka and Ise Layla were introduced as well. I also see some of the members helping the trio, and its really cute. Dunno if they are promoting Apple products, but they sure like using them in their MV’s.

I am a bit saddened that the MV doesn’t feature much my favorite members much, but they still got a lot of good solo shots in the MV.

Now for the choreography, I can’t really tell much about it until I see the whole choreo, but I think the Dance is a bit…underwhelming. After their consecutive amazing dance choreos in their previous songs, I kinda have a high expectations with their dance, but from what I could see from the MV, it looks sloppy and tame compared to their previous dance songs. I do see some slick moves here and there, but not overall.

I do hope I am wrong about this.

Overall, this song is underwhelming as a single, but its a good song to introduce what ANGERME is.

Zenzen Okiagarenai SUNDAY

OMG, this song is good. TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE.

This song is hits you to the core, from its slick instrumentals to its clean melody. Damn!

Oh man, I can’t believe it.

I’ll be honest, I didn’t expect ANGERME would release a slow dance song as this is quite unusual for the group, but they pulled this off flawlessly.

As this song was both written and composed by the legendary, Tsunku, no wonder its so…AMAZING. Tsunku had always been amazing when he writes songs for other artists other than Morning Musume, and this song is a great example to it.

What’s so great about the song? Well, first up would be its lyrics as this song is about breakup, in denial, and pain. The lyrics resonates to its arrangement as we got a slow but addicting melody that represents well the feelings of a person in pain because of breakup. I love it.

The song parts were well distributed to everyone, but yeah, I don’t think Haruka and Rin got a line. It’s okay, I know they’ll grow.

Now for the MV, oh man, it’s one of the best MV’s released in 2019 under Hello! Project.

All of the members got an amazing solo shot and they are so beautiful in this MV. I love how creative the MV is, like the flower bed and the whole set of the MV.

But the main highlight of the MV would be its Dance. Oh man, its soooo good. To be able to dance aesthetically, all of them were barefoot and it added alot more grace to the dance. I especially love the dance break. Layla danced beautifully as a ballerina while their main dancers executed the dance break flawlessly and with prowess. It’s amazing.

As this song was more experimental compared to the previous song, I do understand why this song wasn’t chosen to be the main lead song. However, as ANGERME was able to pull this one off, this song overpowered Watashi Watashi.

Now for the Side B songs.

Totte Oki no Oshare wo Shite

As my favorite member of ANGERME, Katsuta Rina, graduated before the single was released, her solo song was atleast added in the single. She was able to get this opportunity as a result for being an idol for more than 10 years under Hello! Project.

Her song is really cute, just like her.

The piano melody of the song sounds so retro, which added alot of cuteness to the song. It compliments well with Rina’s vocals too.

But the main highlight of the song would be its lyrics. The song was written by ex-ANGERME subleader, Fukuda Kanon. She was able to create an amazing song that represent who Rina is very well as both of them worked together for a long time.

Myouban, Galaxy Gekijou de

This Side B song is a fun and quite old school. It’s a song I can imagine old ANGERME or Coutnry Girls would sing. It’s very Hello! Project. There is nothing amazing about this one, and that might be the reason why this song was just a Side B.

I do want to see this song live, maybe through that I can appreciate this one more.

Overall, this single is quite good. It’s not as solid as their previous releases, but it is their current highest single yet, so maybe the Japanese adores this more.

I dunno if you noticed it already, but yeah, Zenzen Okiagarenai SUNDAY is my favorite in this single. It’s also my 2nd  most repeated song on my music player. Lol.

Looks like the future of ANGERME is still very bright, even though they lost quite a lot of members last 2019.

I can’t wait to see these songs live.

This has been Will Sirius and thanks for taking your time and let me spazz on songs you guys haven’t hear of.

Do check them out.
