Music Album Feature: "SQUARE UP" by BLACKPINK

Reading Time: 4 minutes

Ever since I started this blog, I always wanted to review different kinds of music. Hence, I started the weekly music feature last year. I featured a variety of music, from western to jpop to kpop. I was even planning on sharing some OPM too. But due to some unforeseen circumstances, I wasn’t able to do it. Since then, I just stuck on the music I had already been sharing, Hello! Project. But now, its going to be different.

I am going to share my thoughts about the latest mini-album release of BLACKPINK, “SQUARE UP”. This will be my first ever KPOP music review. Wooohhooo!!

To be honest, I am kinda scared to do this, especially KPOP has become huge. For sure, there would be so many people who would disagree to my sentiments, but that’s okay. As long as its not bashing and too personal, I’m cool with it.

Anyway, I won’t prolong the intro no more, here’s my thoughts:

black version Album cover

This is BLACKPINK’s first ever mini-album. A long time coming. This was released last June 15, 2018, in 2 different versions, pink & black.

  1. Ddu-Du Ddu-Du (뚜두뚜두)
  2. Forever Young
  3. Really
  4. See U Later

My Thoughts:

Ever since they debuted, they had been on my radar. Being the new girl group of YG after 2NE1, they sure were quite hyped. I used to listen to their music casually, but “As If It’s Your Last” made me a fan of them. The song was one of the best I had heard that was released last year. Cuz of it, I have high expectations for this album. Ooohohohoho.

Ddu-Du Ddu-Du (뚜두뚜두)

Hhhmmmm… I didn’t expect this one. Do I like it? Yeah. Was it better than their previous release? Nope.

The overall song is enjoyable to listen. Its very modern and now. No wonder so many people enjoy this song. I really like the melody of the refrain,  The vocals were on point and amazing. The rap sections didn’t disappoint too. Its full of swag and confidence. Though I do wanna say the chorus and the coda section were a downer. It lacked punch. Still, everything in the song flowed really well. I like it.

I think my problem with the song would be the fact that its not on par or even better than their previous release, “As if It’s your last”. For a summer song, this one is less upbeat and more on swag. When it comes to summer songs, its better if its upbeat, lively, and lighthearted. But this one is….nope. If this was released on a different season, like Fall, I think I would appreciate this more.

Forever Young

Woah, this one is…AMAZING. The intro already got me. Its so good. It definitely left quite an impression to me. I can hear the sincerity of Jennie’s vocals, she really meant every word she said. It was that powerful. The following verses didn’t disappoint too. I really like the melody. I really like that I could also hear the rapper’s sing too. Really nice.
That drop though. I didn’t expect that at all. Dropping after the coda section….Damn. The next section of the song felt and sound different but at the same time, it goes really well with the whole song.

For some point, this song felt more for summer compared to the main single. I mean, it has alot of potential. Listening to it amplified my imagination. I could see this song getting an MV with an outside setting and the members having fun, then during the drop, they go all out dancing. Well, that’s just me.

To be honest, I really like this better than Ddu-Du Ddu-Du. ohooh.

My sister first heard the whole album before me. When she heard this song, she kept on telling me that this is too similar to WINNER’s “Really Really”. This got me curious. I really liked WINNER’s song, so I do hope its as good.
After listening to it, hhhmmmmm…. the whole melody of the song is not like WINNER’s song. But I think what made her say its similar would be the chorus. Having a title “Really” and repeating it quite alot during the chorus, my sis’ sentiments were quite understandable.

Really is easy to listen. Out of all the songs here in the mini-album, this one is the ‘slowest’. The arrangement of the song reminds me alot of 2NE1’s music. Especially the verses parts, though the rap parts were quite distinct. Overall, the song is okay, not really much going on.

See U Later

Nice way to end the mini-album. I really like the melody in the intro and in the verses and rap parts. The verses were neatly done, it flowed well with the rap parts. The chorus though, didn’t expect that. It sounded like a different song, but it fits well. Compared to the first 2 songs above, this lacked climax. Even though theirs coda section, it was lacking alot.

Overall, I’m not really into this album. I will casually listen to this, thats a fact, but heavily??…nope. This type of music is not my jam. The lack of real instruments involved made the songs boring to listen if on repeat. Through this album, I understand now so clearly the type of music YG produces. They have this kind of hip-hop sound and way of singing, just like in JYP. I’m okay with it, but if this continues on and no growth, it would be very boring for me.
Also, I wanna rant about the lackluster chorus. The repeating words in the chorus in all the songs are getting on my nerves. Yes, the verses and the rap parts are rich of lyrics, but with a lackluster chorus, everything felt incomplete.

So yeah, the album was a disappointment, but its still enjoyable to listen. I don’t hate it. Maybe my expectations were to high, or the reason would be my different taste in music. Out of all the songs here, it was only Forever Young were I felt genuine connection. It would be nice if that song would get atleast an MV soon.

Oh boi…I’m going to be roasted soon.
Anyway, thanks for reading.
