Vision of Escaflowne Anime Review
Rewatching old stuff. Yep. I’m going to keep this short. Just want to share some few old and new thoughts and feelings.
Rewatching this anime made me remember how much I really really like this anime when I was young. This was one of the first animes I watched completely from start to finish. Was this a masterpiece? Hell, no. Its memorable at best.
VISION OF ESCAFLOWNE
Synopsis: Hitomi Kanzaki is just an ordinary 15-year-old schoolgirl with an interest in tarot cards and fortune telling, but one night, a boy named Van Fanel suddenly appears from the sky along with a vicious dragon. Thanks to a premonition from Hitomi, Van successfully kills the dragon, but a pillar of light appears and envelopes them both. As a result, Hitomi finds herself transported to the world of Gaea, a mysterious land where the Earth hangs in the sky.
In this new land, Hitomi soon discovers that Van is a prince of the Kingdom of Fanelia, which soon falls under attack by the evil empire of Zaibach. In an attempt to fight them off, Van boards his family’s ancient guymelef Escaflowne—a mechanized battle suit—but fails to defeat them, and Fanelia ends up destroyed. Now on the run, Hitomi and Van encounter a handsome Asturian knight named Allen Schezar, whom Hitomi is shocked to find looks exactly like her crush from Earth. With some new allies on their side, Van and Hitomi fight back against the forces of Zaibach as the empire strives to revive an ancient power. (MAL)
I enjoyed watching this anime. This beautiful mess anime.
The premise was good, but the storytelling was a mess. I didn’t notice this when I was young, but now, the weird direction of the story was distracting. There were times it feels like the anime was too fast, other times it feels too slow. It was really weird and confusing. If we outlined all the plot points of the series in a paper, I could say that this anime would be really amazing. Unfortunately, it wasn’t executed well in the anime. So sad.
The art and animation though. For an old late 90’s anime, this looks good. Really good, except the weird long noses of the characters. I really really like how the colour scheme of the series fits really well with the story. It added a lot of depth to the series. Each character looks really unique and memorable, and the animation, especially on the fight scenes, was really interesting and appealing. Again, the nose. Why was it too pointy, and long? It was distracting before, and its still distracting my rewatching now too. XD
Most of the characters were memorable and likeable. I find the main girl sometimes annoying. Well, her decisions and choices irritated me a lot. I especially didn’t like how she handled her feelings all through out the series. At first, she fell in love with Allen cuz he looks exactly like her crush. And yeah, we can see some undertone attraction between Van and Hitomi, but her switch of feelings was a little bit undeveloped. Maybe if those feelings were given more depth, I think it would have flowed a lot better. I did had a crush both with Allen and Van. Especially Van. Even after rewatching, he is still hot and handsome in my eyes.
The ending. I could write/express a lot of ways how to end this series, and yet they chose that type of ending. Do I like it? Nope, not a bit. But it was okay. Uuugggghhhhh…I just wish it didn’t end that way. Oh well.
Overall, this series was a good watch. A good and enjoyable binge-watch. There’s a lot of flaws in this series, yeeee, and they’re kinda easy to find. Still, the overall experience is satisfying. Go give it a try. 🙂
That is all.
Thanks for reading.
