As you all know, I don’t have enough time to watch everything. Cuz of that, I tried to drop animes I think that MIGHT be bad as many as I could, but there were 2 animes that keeps on bugging me. Those were Toji no Miko & Hakyuu Hoshi no Engi. These 2 animes were the most underrated and were considered ‘not worth the watch’ type of animes, and I kinda agree to that. Their first episodes were…un-engaging and not intriguing, but still, I continued to watch them, this time…in batch. And bruh, IT’S ENTERTAINING! I haven’t finished Hakyuu Hoshi no Engi, so its review would be later. For now, let me talk about Toji no Miko.
I didn’t expect that I would enjoy this series. Toji no Miko was an anime I didn’t look forward to watch. There’s so many negative sides I could point out about, and yet, everything are washed away only cuz I enjoyed binge-watching the hell out of it.
Toji no Miko had a lackluster first few episodes. The worldbuilding sucked, The art & animation was average, the characters weren’t that interesting, and I freakin’ don’t understand WTF was going on. I was on the verge of dropping it, but then the story started to pick up some pace and the characters became alot more interesting. The plot didn’t just focused on the main girls, but its actually alot larger than I even imagine. Though the worldbuilding still sucked, the whole story and how it unfolds hooked me to a point that I can’t stop watching the series. Its twists and turns, ups and downs, got me on the edge of my seat. I can’t stop myself on pressing the “next episode” button. It was that interesting.
It wasn’t just the story, the characters also became really interesting. They didn’t just become some 2D characters who are there for the plot, they actually grow and development. I especially like the 2 main characters, Kanami & Hiyori. At the beginning of the series, I immediately judge them to be generic and the typical kind of protagonists, but they proved me wrong. I first thought of Kanami as a clueless, ‘just so happen to be really strong’ and ‘I will help you no matter what’ type of protagonist. She’s actually really smart, empathic, quite stubborn and a really good friend. Getting to know her more all through out the series made me like her the most. SHE’S SO AWESOME! Hiyori developed also but not as much as Kanami. The other main girls were really great as well. They entertained me alot with their interactions and unique personalities. Seeing them mature and become really reliable was really nice to watch.
I don’t think I could move on to another topic without mentioning the yuri baiting all through out the series. There soooo many ships in this series. Almost all the girls here are either lesbains or lesbians. LOL. The closeness of the girls with each other makes me think that its more than friendship. I like all the pairings, but I really like Kanami-Hiyori & Suzuka-Maki pairings. Their moments are to die for. I can’t help but spazz and got feels overload watching them. Unfortunately, its only yuri baiting, not really official which is a bummer. Still, I enjoyed their strong friendships and relationships. It added alot of depth to the series.
For the art & animation, they are generic and typical. Visual wise, I really thought this anime was done by A-1 pictures. LOL. The character designs are not bad, they are not really interesting. I do like that the girls have different uniforms, at least you can easily differentiate who is who and what school they came from. I just want to point out that these girls…DON’T LOOK LIKE 13 YEARS OLD STUDENTS THOUGH. It’s so weird. The animation and the consistency of the 2D animation was okay, it was the CG that made me irked. In the first few episodes, that the fight scenes were abit…uncomfortable to watch, but it does get better later on. At least.
I don’t know if you guys notice this but in every anime season since…in the recent years, there seemed to be atleast 1 action school animes starring girl protagonists. I watched one from few years ago called Ange Vierge and also the amazing Keijo!!!!!!!!. In last year, there alot: Battle Girls High School, Frame Arms Girls, & Schoolgirl Strikers: Animation Channel, which I didn’t watch at all. Its a hit or miss and most of the time, its a miss. I’m happy that Toji no Miko was the former.
Overall, the series was really enjoyable. I had fun binge-watching this one. I think the reason why people (like me before) immediately drop this anime cuz of the meh beginning and also cuz the main characters are girls. It tend to give an impression that it would be like any typical anime out there that at least we had seen once. I do hope people would give this one a chance.
That is all.
Thanks for reading!!
