12 Days of Anime: The Anime Standouts of the Decade
Reading Time: 8 minutes

For today’s entry, I will be sharing the anime standouts of the decade.

This last 10 years had been amazing for the anime industry. Not only there were alot of really good animes released, anime also became more and more popular than ever before all over the world.

To celebrate the end of a decade, I will be sharing the anime standouts of each year, starting from 2010 to 2019.

Even though I wasn’t able to thoroughly watched all the animes released last 2010-2012, I think I have an idea what animes that standout the most during those times.

To start off, let me express that everything I will be saying later are all my opinion. I might not include your favorite anime or not even think they standout, please know that I am also human and for sure, I wasn’t able to watch all of the animes released this decade. So…please bear with me.

Now that everything is laid out, time to start.

2010

This was a memorable year for me, personally, as it was the year I graduated high school and generally felt I was a grown up. At this time, I wasn’t really into anime again as I was more focused on becoming an idol fan and tv series fan instead.

But if I were to base on the list of animes released last 2010, the standout animes for me were Angel Beats, Kaichou wa Maid-sama, K-On S2, Highschool of the Dead, Seitokai Yakuindomo, OreImo, The World Only God Knows and Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu.

I chose these animes as the standouts of the year because they were all the ones I watched and loved dearly. Each one of them left an everlasting impression to me. I especially adore Angel Beats and K-On as they helped me during my down times. Both Seitokai and Baka to Test were amazing highschool comedy shows and personally, are the best in that genre. Kaichou wa Maid-sama became my favorite romance anime ever since I saw it and The World only God Knows definitely set a high standard of what should a harem romance anime should be.

And then, of course, there’s OreImo.

I recently saw Highschood if the Dead, and oh boy, its so good.

The start of the decade sure is promising.

2011

After the promising start, more amazing animes were released.

The anime standouts for me would be: AnoHana, Sket Dance, Dog Days, Yuru Yuri, The iDOLM@STER, Guilty Crown, & Haganai.

There were alot more animes I skipped like Madoka Magica and Steins;Gate. However, I didn’t chose them as standouts for me as I haven’t watched them yet. (I know >,< )

AnoHana brought me to tears, while Sket Dance and Haganai gave me laughs like not other. Dog Days made me watch to watch preteen animes again, while both Yuru Yuri and The iDOLM@ASTER gave me alot of non-canon yuri vibes. Guilty Crown left a huge impression to me as it was a hot mess but at the same time, the ending made me bawl my eyes out.

In terms of anime power, it’s alot weaker than the year before, but still, its a solid year.

2012

For the year 2012, the standouts were: Highschool DxD, Daily lives of Highschool Boys, Senki Zesshou Symphogear, Hyouka, Accel World, Jormungand, Sword Art Online, Psycho Pass, Chuunibyou demo koi ga shita, Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure, BTOOOM!, & Girls & Panzer.

I think everyone would agree that 2012 was SAO’s year. That’s it.

However, I still want to acknowledge the fact that it was also in 2012 when my top anime favorites debuted.

But still, 2012 is SAO’s year.

2013

Just like 2012, 2013 was Attack on Titan‘s year.

It was the year that I think made the anime mainstream. I mean, even casual viewers were actually watching or knows AoT, and that’s amazing.

But 2013, also has alot of standout animes too. Yes, they were pretty much overshadowed by AoT’s success, but these animes were the ones that made me became a fan again, so they are precious.

The animes were: Mondaiji-tachi ga Isekai kara Kuru Sou Desu yo?, Love Live! School IdolProject, Hataraku Maou-sama!, Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Comedy wa Machigatteiru., Date a Live, Toaru Kagaku no Railgun S, Free!, Kill la Kill, Log Horizon, Kyoukai no Kanata, Diamond no Ace, & Outbreak Company.

Damn, they sure are alot.

I added Railgun S2 here because this series was my gateway to the To Aru Universe. While checking different animes airing in this year, I saw a glimpse of awesomeness with the 2nd season. Because of this, I decided to check out Index then Railgun. Bruh, THE BEST DECISION I MADE.

This was the year I fully embraced anime again into my life, and these animes mentioned above definitely made me look forward to see more shows in this medium.

2014

2014 wasn’t as strong as 2013, but the animes in this year were solid enough to not disappoint me.

It was this year when these anime standouts were released: Nisekoi, Noragami, Sakura Trick, No Game No Life, Haikyuu!, Tokyo Ghoul, Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun, Your Lie in April, 7 Deadly Sins, & Shirobako.

Sakura Trick was my first ever yuri anime that was…full on yuri. I mean, I watched alot of yuri bait shows before, and this anime was the first one that is legit yuri.

I wasn’t supposed to add Your life in april here as I haven’t finished it yet, but I don’t think my 2014 would be complete if I won’t include it.

Of course, the fan favorite Shirobako is here. This anime was very memorable because of its premise. It gave us a glimpse of what might’ve happen behind the scenes while making an anime.

Compared to the previous years, it was in this year where I watched pretty much all of the animes released as I was still consuming anime at a fast rate.

However, it did died down in the next couple of years.

2015

2015 was One Punch Man‘s year.

Even though this series was released late (Fall 2015), its impact to the anime community was definitely noteworthy.

2015 was also the year when these animes were released: Death Parade, Assassination Classroom, How to Raise a Boring Girlfriend, Food Wars, Danmachi, Owari no Seraph, Kekkai Sensen, Hibike Euphonium & Overlord.

Out of all the animes mentioned, my most favorite would be Saekano, or How to Raise a Boring Girlfriend. I dunno why, I just love this series very much.

It was also in this year when 2 vampire-themed animes rivaled for the top spot. Sadly, Owari no Seraph won over Kekkai Sensen, even though in my opinion, the latter was a mile better.

Food por- I mean Food wars was released in 2015. Since then, I see anime food as really really yummy.

2016

2016 was in some ways, similar to 2015. A lot of great animes were released, but they never reached the same hype as SAO or AoT got.

It was in this year when these amazing animes were released: Erased, KonoSuba, Boku no Hero Academia, Re:Zero, Bungou Stray Dogs, Koutetsujou no Kabaneri, Mob Psycho 100, & Yuri on Ice.

Out of all the standouts, my fav were BSD, KonoSuba and Kabaneri. Mob Psycho 100 was amazing, yes, but I guess, I really don’t feel amazed that much like how others do. MHA was still in its infant stages here, it wasn’t yet amazing but its 1st season was a good start of the franchise.

Yuri on Ice was the breakout anime of this year. Not only it was quite late to the party, I could still remember how hyped this series was, especially to the anime girl fans. They….were really strong when it comes to they ship.

2017

This was the year when I started my blog! Yeeeheeee!!

It was also my comeback to watching animes weekly.

I had seen quite alot of animes in this year, but these animes were the standouts: Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon, Youjo Senki, Little Witch Academia, Eromanga-sensei, Welcome to the Ballroom, Gamers, Made in Abyss, Kakegurui, Highschool of the Elite, Princess Principal, Mahoutsukai no Yome, Netjuu no Susume, and Houseki no Kuni.

Most of these animes blew me away with they stories and animation. It was also this year when I became more and more interested with reading mangas, as most of the good animes released in 2017 were originally a manga.

And yeah, Eromanga-sensei was released too…yeah. I acknowledge its existence, okay.

2018

This was my best year in blogging. Not only that, this year was the peak of awesome releases.

We got alot of new animes and amazing sequels too. Such an amazing year.

To refresh your minds, the anime standouts of this year were: Violet Evergarden, Devilman Crybaby, Darling in the FRANXX, Sora yori mo Tooi Basho, Wotaku ni Koi wa Muzukashii, Hinamatsuri, Golden Kamuy, Comic Girls, Uma musume, Hataraku Saibou, Hanebado, Seishun Buta Yarou wa Bunny Girl Senpai no Yume wo Minai, Goblin Slayer, Tensei shitara Slime Datta Ken, Zombieland Saga, SSSS.Gridman, & Yagate Kimi ni Naru.

Those were just the new animes, there were alot of anime sequels that were a standout too: Overlord 2 & 3, My Hero Academia 2, Tokyo Ghoul:re, Steins:Gate 0, Food Wars 3 part A, Attack on titan 3A, Sword Art Online 3, & To Aru Majutsu no Index 3.

Bruh, as you can see, 2018 was the best year when it comes to anime releases, as there were ALOT of amazing animes airing at the same time. Even until now, I still haven’t seen/finished watching most of the series I mentioned above. It’s a struggle, bruh.

I’m still very happy to be able to witness this glorious moment.

2019

For this year, well, I already made an entry about it. So just check that one instead.
