From one disappointing anime to another. Damn. Taboo Tattoo should have been amazing, but it’s not.
It missed the mark.
Seigi, a martial arts trained middle schooler, often feels driven to protect the weaker people around him. One day, he defends a homeless man against some punks, and the man gives him a strange tattoo on his palm in return. The tattoo is a secret weapon produced in the arms race between America and the Serinistan Kingdom.
Seigi finds himself in over his head when a powerful girl, using the same secret weapon, violently pursues him in order to retrieve it. His skill at martial arts may not be enough to keep him alive, but will he be able to learn how to trigger the power of his tattoo in time? (MAL)
Taboo Tattoo aired few years ago. It was one of those anime that I felt like it would bombed, but for some point, something about it made me want to watch it. I dunno, my gut I guess.
Well, compared to my previous review, I greatly enjoyed this one more.
How come? Let me share first the good things about this series.
Surprisingly, I actually like the premise. Believe me, I know how generic the premise is, but its been awhile since I watched a typical action anime series. It was really refreshing, I like it.
If you had been reading my anime reviews, you guys have noted how much I really appreciate if the characters have legit interactions with each other. And bruh, this series had tons. The characters, as themselves, were okay and interesting. It was the interactions between the characters that made each one of them shine, in terms of personality, and made me enjoy the series more than I expected.
One word, GORE
Yeah bruh, this series was full on gore. I really didn’t expect it at all. I thought it would be like any other tame action animes, but nope, blood were splashing anywhere. This is an absolute rare sight and I extremely LOVE IT!
Bluesy Fluesy (Izzy)
Yep, she’s one of the reason as to why I love this series. The moment I saw her in the first episode, I knew she’s something different. Her personality pretty much sold me to the show. I thought she would be the typical stuck-up tsundere main character…
She’s actually a mature lady stuck in a highschool girl’s body. How did this happened? Watch the series to know. LOL.
Now, that I mentioned the good points, time for the bad ones.
Uuugggghhhh… This bad point was a pain. All through out the anime, I felt like I was watching a series on a fast train. The story was told in a fast pace that I feel like they skipped alot of important stuff and pretty much left me speechless. It was so bad, but I know the series had a lot of promise.
Uuuggghhh…its so frustrating.
I think you guys have noticed, I haven’t talked about it’s art and animation, well, there is nothing amazing about it. But I totally have something to say with its cinematography.
One of the reasons why I put this series on-hold and turned off a lot of anime viewers, was its weird cinematography. Not only in action scenes, but in every moment, the camera angles goes beyond the normal/usual way of animation. Yes, its unique, but bad. It’s execution was really bad. It gave a headache on my first watch ( I was watching it on my PC), but I was able to bear with it after few episodes (I watched it on my phone).
It takes time to get used to it, but its not as aweful as Handshakers and that speaks a lot.
Akatsuka Seigi (Justice)
While Izzy was one of the reason I love this series, the main protagonist, Seigi, was one of the reason I dislike this series. He’s very generic, like VERY AF.
On the brightside, thanks to his genericness, Izzy stands out and I love it.
Overall, this series was a wasted potential. The anime adaptation pretty much destroyed all its chances to get a season 2. Sad.
But I do admit, after watching this series, it made me want to check out the source material, it’s manga. I hope it would be better than the anime.
Okay, I know I said I will be posting “short” entries in the next couple of days, but I can’t help it. I want you guys to know my thoughts about this series.
I mean, this series is not so bad, it had a bad adaptation. That’s all.
I’ll definitely check its manga and I might review it in the future. Heh.
Anyway, that is all.
This had been Will Sirius and thanks for reading!!
