Release the Spyce is not that promising
Reading Time: 3 minutes

Ever since I had seen the Princess Principal anime few years ago, I desired to see another spy anime led by girls. That’s where Release the Spyce came in.

The moment I saw the trailer, I really thought this anime could satisfy the itch and thirst for spy animes, but I was wrong.

It wasn’t as good as I expected.

Momo Minamoto is a shy teenager who simply wants to do good in the world. Her dream is to follow in her police officer father’s footsteps and support law and order. And just like him, she has a very unique ability: her senses are much more refined than those of any average person. A simple lick will enable her to determine what someone is feeling.

One night, as she admires the landscape, Momo sees suspicious shades moving in the distance. After learning that those shades were spies, she is recruited by their captain Yuki Hanzoumon, a senior at her school. The members of their secret agency, called the Tsukikage, also have the power to gain strength after ingesting spices.

Release the Spyce is an action-packed spy series about the Tsukikage’s missions as they fight in the shadows to protect the city from crime while keeping up with their high school life. (MAL)

I’ll go straight to the point, I was disappointed by this anime.

Not only it didn’t fulfill my thirst for spy animes, it was also very underwhelming. Maybe its my fault for putting alot of expectations for this anime, but uuuggghhhh…at least they should have done a bit of something right. But no, and its a shame.

At the beginning, the premise as you see from above, it’s a bit clear that this anime is “meh”, but the trailer showed alot of promise. Because of this, I had hope. But after few the 3rd episode, its quite clear, this anime is going down.

Believe me, I tried.

The double agent thing was quite a nice touch, but I was able to deduce who the double spy was, and it wasn’t thrilling. The arcs presented were so-so, which made the development of the characters pretty much left in the air.

Speaking of characters, they never grow on me. I thought I might like the main character, but she turned out to be boring and stereotypical. She did, however, grow, but it never got me to like her…at all. I especially don’t like other main spy girls, except that pink twin tail girl, as they were really flat in terms of personality.

The art and animation was mediocre too. I really didn’t expect much with this as I relied more on its story to wow me, but yeah, this also failed. I do like the character designs as it represent well the personalities of the casts. But I am not a fan of the overall color pallette of the series. It made the series really bland and boring to watch.

Overall, Release the Spyce was a miss for me. I really tried to enjoy it, but with my broken impression on it already, it was already hard for the series to grow on me. I guess, it would have been nice if I didn’t put much expectations to this series….but I think I will still be disappointed by it, with or without expectations. LOL. It was that mediocre. Haha.

I had been a bit busy with IRL stuff again, especially now that my PC broke down. RIP 9 year old PC.

Anyway, I am trying to survive my blog through my phone and using someone else’s laptop, and I think I am thriving. LOL. Because of this, expect some short entries from me in the next days.

Heh.

Anyway, that’s it for now.

This has been Will Sirius and thanks for reading!!
