Mouretsu Pirates – Abyss of Hyperspace: Quick Thoughts

I had always enjoyed watching Mouretsu Pirates. It’s not like any other animes out there. For an intriguing plot, it takes it self seriously and yet, at the same time, it doesn’t.

But I am not here to talk about Mouretsu Pirates. Let’s shift our attention to its sequel, Mouretsu Pirates Movie – Abyss of Hyperspace.

Between her studies, leading her school’s space yacht club, working part time at Cafe Lamp, and being the captain of the space pirate ship Bentenmaru, Marika’s days are very busy. One day, Marika gets a job to rob a high-class passenger ship, and she discovers that on the passenger list is Kanata Mugen, a boy who owns a “galaxy pass”. Thus, an adventure featuring a hyperspace race between pirates and one young boy begins. (MAL)

Before we talk about the movie, let me give you a brief insight of my thoughts about the series.

Mouretsu pirates was just a series I randomly watch out of boredom. Little did I know, I would like the series very much. For a Sci-Fi & Space anime, its vibe and aura was so… bright… like a Slice of life anime. The way the protagonist, Marika, and the other characters faced their problems and obstacles, it was full of positivity and really good atmosphere. The character just laugh it off and give each other support to overcome the obstacles. I can’t help but feel good everytime I finish an episode. It was that bright and enjoyable.

Because of that, I do have a high hopes for this movie sequel.

The story of Mouretsu Pirates The Movie – Abyss of Hyperspace seemed to happen after the happenings of the series. We see that the movie is like any other arc of MP, but this time, it involves a new protagonist, Kanata. He’s uhhhh…not that appealing, character-wise but he is quite relevant to the plot. The story paced well and the animation was superb, as always.

I think my only problem with this movie would be the lack of depth of the new characters. As a fan of the series, I already know most of the characters in the series, but for Kanata and the movie antagonists, they didn’t get enough time to be fleshed out. Especially the antagonists. I felt that there’s more information that needs to be told, but unfortunately, we didn’t get to hear them out. Sad.

Still, the movie was a great watch. I get to see Bentenmaru in action again, we also get a scenes of Marika’s mother being so OP, I just love it. The animation was sure heighten to let us, viewers, enjoy a visually stunning space fight.
I really like the fact that this movie was able to maintain the aura and vibe of the series. Marika, being the influencer, her optimism sure is quite infectious. She already influenced all the characters from the series, so making Kanata be influenced was an easy task for her. I also really liked that most of the characters from the series were atleast relevant to the movie. From the members of the club, to the waitresses of the cafe, no one was left out. I totally like that.

Overall, this movies was fun to watch. I think I might be bias cuz I am a fan of the series, but yeah, this movie was really enjoyable to watch.

I totally recommend this to everyone. But before watching this movie, please do watch the series first. 🙂

That is all.
Thanks for reading!!
