Spread the love

I recently got a BD copy of Mayo Chiki! few weeks ago. It’s been awhile since I had seen it and I kinda wanna check out the dub so I rewatched it. I’m so happy I did it cuz it’s still so good and the dub was fantastic.

Synopsis: Due to his mother and sister, who both love professional wrestling, Kinjirou Sakamachi developed a resilient body that could take hard punches, aggressive kicks, and even deadly vehicle bumps, in order to survive their various grappling positions and locks. However, he also developed gynophobia, an abnormal fear of women. With just one touch from a girl, his nose bleeds uncontrollably, he sweats excessively, and in rare cases, faints abruptly.
His life changes for the worse because of a fated meeting in the restroom. While trying to escape from a girl, he discovers that the most popular student in their school, Subaru Konoe—the butler of the headmaster’s daughter, Kanade Suzutsuki—is actually female! Surprised, Subaru violently assaults Kinjirou, dealing significant damage and knocking him unconscious. When he comes to, he meets Kanade. In exchange for his silence, she promises to help cure his phobia. (MAL)

This series never fails to make me laugh. Mayo Chiki revolves around a crossdressing butler, a sadistic rich girl, a tsundere bunny, a stupid pro-wrestler lil’ sis, a slash tan girl  and a gynophobic main character. With that kind of cast, I don’t care if I keep on watching this series. It’s that fun and enjoyable.

The premise, as mentioned at the synopsis above, is really really interesting. It’s like no other. There wasn’t a moment in this series that I don’t like. It’s that enjoyable. Everything flowed really well and and the pacing was consistent all through out. To be honest, I couldn’t pin-point much if there’s even plot-holes or something cuz I was having too much fun.

But the best thing in this series is not the story, but the characters itself.

I briefly describe the lead characters above and by those description you can immediately assume that all of them are unique and for sure their interactions would be crazy. And indeed it is. The way the lead characters play off with each other’s tics shows off how good the writing of the story and script. You can also tell how each of their banters felt natural which results to me, enjoying the hell out of this anime.

Compared to other animes, I actually have 2 favorite characters in this anime. I really really like both Kanade and Usami. Both of them kinda clash with each other, but thats not the reason I liked them.

Kanade is the first one I liked, She’s so cunning and manipulative, I really don’t want to mess with her. I wanna be friends with her and at the same time, I freakin’ want to be her butler too. She’s so smart too. She does everything she wants just to ‘help’ cure Jirou’s phobia of girls and make her butler, Subaru happy. Though I could really tell that she is also falling for Jirou, and uuuggghhhh I want them together more than the main couple. (I think I just got bitten by the 2nd-lead syndrome, gosh!)

Usami is a really really great tsundere character. I usually get pissed off by this trope, but Usami is in some ways, rather unique. She might be a tsundere, but that doesn’t define her. Most of the time, she acts as the straight man to almost all the jokes in the series and also the ‘sane’ character alongside Jirou. When she was first introduced, I pretty much don’t care about her, but dang she planted a seed in my heart and she bloomed. She climbed my favorites lists so fast, now she’s tied with the princess. They’ll forever be frenemies, huh? Even in my heart. XD

This anime was released 7 years ago, but infairness, the quality of its art & animation still looks superb. The character designs were in some ways similar to the source material, but I could also see alot of studio feel’s designs into the mix. The color scheme of the series is not so bright to a point of blinding me, but it’s bright enough to keep me attentive to the series. The animation is definitely amazing for a 2011 anime. It’s so smooth, I love it.

Like I said in the intro, this is my 2nd watch but this time in english dub. And damn, the American voice actors did an amazing job dubbing the characters. I had always adored the japanese dub of Mayo Chiki, especially both Subaru and Kanade are voiced by amazing VA’s: Iguchi Yuka & Kitamura Eri, respectively. But the performance of the english dub made the series much more fun to watch. I especially love Kanade’s dub, Carli Mosier’s voice is really sexy and it fits well with Kanade’s personality. Genevieve Simmons, Subaru’s VA, also didn’t back down with her amazing performance with switching back and forth from girly to manly. Splendid job!

Overall, Mayo Chiki is one of the harem animes that I clearly enjoy watching and definitely recommend to everyone. What made this different from any other harem animes out there would be the Main character, Jirou. He’s not boring and interacts well with the girls. He’s also not that dense (which is an important feature, everyone!)

That’s why, I would definitely recommend this anime to everyone. You won’t regret it.

Though, it does sucks that it has no sequel.

Anyway, that’s it for now.
Thanks for reading!
