Reading Time: 4 minutesBefore I start this review, I want to tell you that I haven’t seen the old Kino no Tabi series. I just got my copy a week ago, so it can’t be helped.

Now, this review will only focus on the 2017 anime series and I won’t compare it to the old one.

Here is my review:

Type: TV
Episodes: 12
Status: Finished Airing
Aired: Oct 6, 2017 to Dec 22, 2017
Premiered: Fall 2017
Studios: Lerche
Source: Light novel
Genres: Action, Adventure, Slice of Life
Duration: 23 min. per ep.
Rating: R – 17+ (violence & profanity)

Destination is a state of mind. A tale of one girl and her bike and the road ahead. Kino wanders around the world on the back of Hermes, her unusual, anthropomorphic motorcycle, only staying in each country for three days. During their adventures, they find happiness, sadness, pain, decadence, violence, beauty, and wisdom. But through it all, they never lose their sense of freedom. They discover that because of the world’s imperfections, it is actually a thing of beauty.

“The world is not beautiful, therefore it is.” (MAL)

My Thoughts:

I already knew how amazing Kino no tabi was, but I never got the chance to watch it. It just so happen that this year, studio lerche animated a retelling of the hit light novel, Kino no Tabi – the Beautiful world. I do admit, I was a bit hesitant in watching this anime, cuz I haven’t seen the old one. But after watching some first impressions videos made by some anitubers, I got really curious and dive in. Totally worth it.

Watching Kino no tabi (2017) anime was a very interesting ride. Each story presented on each episode were all very intriguing and interesting in their very own way. Every week, I get to experience a different kind of adventure. It felt like I was with thr characters too, exploring each town they entered, experiencing the stuff they experienced. I really really like it.

The art and animation was really bright and modern. I like the fact that they also change the tone of the color scheme just to fit to the story. But there were some moments that the light and bright color scheme of the anime were quite misleading. I just assume that the studio did that on purpose.

The CG animation added on some scenes were…little bit off at times, but I try to overlook it as much as possible. Using CG animation over 2D animation on those scenes were kinda understandable. I think my only problem would be the blending of the CG animation to the background. This problem is quite common to all animes who adds CG animation to their work.

Kino and Hermes’ interactions were really cute. I like it. Both of them have distinct personalities and thoughts. So everytime they talked, each of them share their thoughts about things and its really intriguing to watch. Most of their talks makes the viewers think about themselves, their life choices, and they view the world. Very thought provoking. I also like how the main characters interact with other people. I can’t really say much of the other characters, after all, the series was episodic so there wasn’t much development on their part.

The lead characters though. I was kinda shocked and confused when the anime shifted from Kino’s perspective to another person’s adventure. I was really expecting only to see what Kino sees. Dunno if their adventures were also in the light novel, so I can’t really say. At least there segments were quite enjoyable to watch too.

Overall, this series was an enjoyable one. I totally recommend this to everyone. I can’t say its a must watch, but definitely this anime is one of a kind.

For sure, the fans of the previous anime wouldn’t like this series and prefers the old one. I can’t blame them. But if your like me, who haven’t seen the old version, theres no problem in diving in to the 2017 version. It all depends on you.

That is all.

Thanks for reading.

  1. I didn’t watch the previous show. This anime had some good episodes then some were kind of boring. I do like Kino and Hermès. They were both adorable. Now I should go watch the previous one now haha

  2. -.-‘
if you have the old, then you should try it next. i saw the old Kino coming out, and I can tell you the new one is laughable. just my opinion though. xD

    • I did saw some memes about the latest Kino no Tabi. Lol.
Also, I saw some people judging the latest one for being a inferior copy of the previous version. Ooohohohhohoh.
Well, until I finished watching the old one (maybe finish reading the novels too), I won’t judge. XD
