Kino no Tabi – The Beautiful World (2003) + Tou no Kuni OVA + Movies Anime Review
After finishing the Kino no Tabi: The Beautiful World the Animated Series (2017), I got interested into watching the old series. I didn’t expect that it had 2 movies and 1 OVA along with the 13 episode series. After finding enough time, I was able to start then finish watching everything awhile ago. Damn. This animated series is definitely something.
KINO NO TABI: THE BEAUTIFUL WORLD
I think I now understand why people said this version is better than the new one. The old version of the series might look old and dull, but it had more impact compared to the newer version.
Let’s talk about the series first. The old series follows the same pattern as to the newer series. But compared to the new one, this one had better storytelling, character development, world building, and pacing. I noticed some similar episodes to the new ones, and I admit, the stories was executed really well in the old version. Specifically the Coliseum episodes. Here in the old version, the story used up 2 episodes to tell the story, while in the newer version, everything was compressed to 1 episode. With having 2 episodes, the characters was fleshed out better and we get to understand more what was happening around the story. Another difference that stood out to me was the last episode of the old series and the 10th episode in the newer series. Both had the same story, and both executed the story well. I think the only thing that was lacking in the newer version was how Kino 2017 approached the situation. In the 2003 version, you see Kino being really really devastated with what happen, while in the 2017, its mostly talking and visuals, it didn’t focus much on what and how Kino was taking everything in.
This kind of difference have quite an impact to the viewers. Because the old version focused more on telling a story and self-discovery, it made the viewers feel more and be engaged to the stories shared in the series.
I didn’t cry, though. Lol.
Next would be the OVA & the Movies. I have nothing much to say about them. They follow the same vibes and storytelling to the old series, which made them a must watch too. I do like the first movie. It gave us a glimpse as to how Kino became Kino. Her struggle with her identity, and her interactions with her Master.
Overall, the series is definitely a must watch. If you liked the new Kino no Tabi series, you would definitely like this one better. You don’t have to mind the old art style and animation, both adds uniqueness and flavour to the old series. Definitely worth your time.
That is all.
Thanks for reading.
