Synopsis: Every 12 years, mercenaries who possess the highest caliber of brute strength, cunning wit, and deadly precision gather to participate in the Zodiac Tournament. Each warrior bears the name and attributes of one of the 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac. With their pride and lives on the line, they engage in vicious combat until only the victor remains.
The 12th Zodiac Tournament begins in a desolate city, devoid of any evidence of the half million people who recently lived there. To raise the stakes, each warrior ingests a poisonous gem, thus setting a time limit on the tournament—and on their life. With one wish for the victor up for grabs, the Zodiac Warriors start their cutthroat battle for survival. (MAL)
An anime about 12 zodiac warriors fighting each other, aka Battle Royale, for a wish to be granted. This anime started really strong, but its quality deteriorated as the series went on. Why is that? Well, it was because of the predictable storytelling, though it did became exciting at the very end. The pattern: introducing a warrior, their life story, kill them afterwards, it was becoming boring as time went on. The last few episodes were kinda different compared to the other episodes. Even though it kinda followed the same formula, it was presented really well and the fighting scenes were really good.
The art & animation was really eye-catching in the first half of the series. I am not much of a fan of 3D CG animation, and I can see them alot in the last few episodes. I didn’t mind. The creators must have struggled alot behind the scenes, hence, the deterioration of the animation, but I’m okay with it. I do hope it will be consistent on BD.
It was…anti-climactic, but I like it. It was better than I expected. Well, I had low expectations already, so, at least. I like it cuz we got a really good backstory of Rat, and his struggle with his ability. We also got a glimpse of the previous warriors and got an idea what would be their wish, in case they were the one who would win the battle. Each one of them had reasonable wishes and it fits well to their own personality, though I do want to see Boar and her harem. Damn, that would be a sight.
I kinda understand now, this anime was originally novel. No wonder. That ending. That explains alot. As an avid reader, if I read the stuff happened in the last few episodes in a novel, I would find the ending alot satisfying. Why? Cuz everything would go in a way I imagine it would be.
For me, the problem in the last episode, was the lack of sound. It was too stagnant, or quiet. It had no impact, cuz of that it was too anti-climactic. If they add a little sprinkle of good sound and slick animation in the last episode (especially the part when Rat was contemplating) it would have more impact to the viewers. What’s done is done. Ooohohohoh. I am no director. I’m just a casual viewer of the series. XD
Overall, this series was enjoyable to watch. And yeah, I would probably rewatch this anime in the future, around that time, a better quality of the anime is released. That will be cool and interesting.
I recommend this as an anime to watch when you have nothing else to watch. I also recommend this to people who likes to watch battle royale type of animes.
That is all.
Thanks for reading.
