I didn’t know the BD of the Free Movie was already released. LOL. Good thing I was able to get a copy.
Anyway, this movie definitely made me rekindle my warm feelings for this series. I’m not really an avid fan of Free, but its memorable….and its a KyoAni anime, of course I would like this one.
Anyway, here’s my thoughts:
High☆Speed!: Free! Starting Days
Infairness, I really really like this movie. Oh my, I didn’t expect this at all.
I’m not really an avid fan of the Free series, though in a way, I find the series important and memorable to me. It was one of the animes I fully watched after my depression, and its one of the animes that made me remember my love for this medium. Another thing is, well, this anime is made by KyoAni. That’s why, this franchise has a very very small space in my heart. Ooohohohohoh.
The story is set around the middle school days of the main characters, Haru & Makoto. In a way, you could consider this movie as “the movie we didn’t exactly need but yeah, thanks anyway”. At least we get to see how Haru & Makoto became after Rin’s leaving and how they grow to become the tv series version. It wasn’t just the two, we also get to meet new characters, specifically Asahi & Ikuya. All four of them are the main protagonists of this movie. All of them joins the swimming club while at the same time, carrying a baggage of feels they couldn’t fully understand. They are confused kids, which is understandable. The problems of the characters doesn’t feel like a plot device for the climax of the story, but they were build overtime. Well, except for Asahi. Those problems, those baggages, were in some ways, kinda a small thing for us adults, but surely for an early teen, it surely is everything. What I really like about the movie was the flow of the story. The flow of the story felt genuine and natural. The problems of the characters doesn’t feel like a plot device for the climax of the story, but they were build overtime. Well, except for Asahi. Definitely much better than the tv series versions.
Another thing I like about the movie is of course the freakin’ visuals. KyoAni did it again. They blow me away with everything they could offer. No words could describe how much I love this studio. From the character designs to the background scenery, even the shot composition….EVERYTHING. I don’t find the visuals distracting, its actually the opposite. It made me pay attention more to what was happening. Each detail, each shot, gives depth to the story.
KyoAni doesn’t disappoint.
Now, time to tackle one more topic related to Free. Yaoi. Yes. This anime is quite a Yaoi bait. The amount of false Yaoi feels is drowning me especially when Makoto & Haru are on screen. I admit, I’m not a big fan of Yaoi but I could consume a relative amount of it. That’s why I’m totally okay with this movie’s Yaoi bait feels.
Overall, this movie was very enjoyable and fun to watch. It might not be a cup of tea to other people, but if you are a fan of the Free series then this series is a must watch. Its still a story of friendship, but its also a sotry of growth and knowing your weakness. Like I said, this anime is a good one. Definitely check this out if you are interested. Though I recommend you not to start in this movie, but check out first the series. In my opinion, its better that way.
Anyway, That is all.
Thanks for reading!!
