As he moves into his uncle’s scuba diving shop, Grand Blue, he eagerly anticipates his dream college life, filled with beautiful girls and good friends.
But things don’t exactly go according to plan. Upon entering the shop, he encounters a group of rowdy, naked upperclassmen, who immediately coerce him into participating in their alcoholic activities. Though unwilling at first, Iori quickly gives in and becomes the heart and soul of the party. Unfortunately, this earns him the scorn of his cousin, Chisa Kotegawa, who walks in at precisely the wrong time. Undeterred, Iori still vows to realize his ideal college life, but will things go according to plan this time, or will his situation take yet another dive?  (MAL)

Grand Blue is the anime I didn’t expect I needed this summer. I mean, I had heard alot of good things about this series, but its not really hyped thats why I forgot this anime existed. RIP me.

Based on a manga, Grand blue is a seinen slice of life anime like no other. Rather than following the usual flow and trope of a SoL, this anime stands out as a modern and “real” take of what college life is. As a college graduate myself, there’s alot of moments here in the series that I actually relate. But the thing is, this series doesn’t take itself seriously. They exaggerate every mundane situation, and that’s what makes this series really really funny. From eccentric situations to hardcore facial expressions, this anime didn’t disappoint.

As for the story, it was told in a very consistent pacing and it’s comedic timing were all on point. It didn’t miss a beat. It handled all of its important points well. I mean, I really thought the series won’t go diving or that the “Diving Club” was only a facade, but no, they actually do alot of club activities. It somewhat balances out with the excess drinking and the WTF moments of the series. That’s definitely a plus.

The characters are funny AF. I really like them all. I thought that alot of them would turn out to be shallow and only the main characters would get alot of screen time but damn, the characters are so great individually that when all of them clash with each other, its a damn festival.

Cuz the characters consists of males and females, Grand Blue is bound to have a “romance” in it. Shockingly, its not just a simple romance, it might turn out to be a harem. Good thing, the romance was greatly lessen and its just subtle. All through out the series, the “main couple” that was focused was Iori & Chisa’s, and I admit they are indeed cute. But! Why?? Why are they cousins?? That’s…INCEST?!!??! Good thing, the series doesn’t repeat the fact that both are cousins and just let it slide as “childhood friends”. That way, I would forget that both are related. LOL.

Overall, this series is really fun to watch. I thought that this season would be dominated by the other comedy series’, but Grand Blue barged right in and take a higher spot. I still think Asobi Asobase as the best comedy anime this season, but Grand blue comes really really close as 2nd.

I totally recommend this to people who just want to watch something and have a good time. Totally worth of your time, everyone. 🙂

Thanks for reading!!

Seriously, good review. Grand Blue was rough in spots, but this was a decent adaptation… But a lot of people tuned out because they weren’t ready for “Animal House: The Anime”.
