Darwin’s Game Anime Review

Reading Time: 4 minutes

After many years of watching animes, I can pinpoint immediately animes that could easily be considered as “trash”, and Darwin’s Game is one of them.

But don’t get me wrong, I don’t hate this show, I ACTUALLY LOVE IT.

High school student Kaname Sudou receives an invitation from a classmate to play Darwin’s Game, a mobile game he has never heard of. However, as soon as he opens the application, a green snake suddenly pops out from his phone screen and bites his neck, leaving him unconscious. Waking up in the infirmary without any signs of a snake bite, he is told by the school to take the rest of the day off. Although he is puzzled by what has happened, he dismisses the surreal experience as a hallucination and boards the train home.

Unfortunately, his curiosity gets the better of him and he uses the application once again. As the application appears to be just like any other battle game, Kaname breathes out a sigh of relief and decides to start his first match. However, the pleasant surprise is short-lived, as his in-game opponent unexpectedly appears right in front of him and attempts to hunt him down with a knife.

As he desperately runs for his life, Kaname puts two and two together and realizes that Darwin’s Game is not an ordinary game, but rather, it’s a brutal fight for survival. (MAL)

Darwin's game

Believe me when I say I didn’t expect I would like Darwin’s Game.

I first got wind of this series after seeing it on my manga reader, the title looks interesting and the cover gives me the vibe that I might like this. However, I didn’t check it out immediately.

Seeing it in anime was my first and I think I did the right choice in watching it over reading it on manga.

Darwin’s Game is a trash anime that is enjoyable to watch. I think I described it right, lol.

The concept is not really unique as I already have seen a lot of shows with a similar concept, naming, Ousama Game, BTOOOM!, Battle Royale, and etc. Still, Darwin’s Game felt like a breath of fresh air last Winter 2020 season as there had been no series like this in a while.

I didn’t expect I actually missed this kind of genre, heh.

Now, about the anime. What did I like about this?

First, I like how interesting Darwin’s Game is. Even though the concept is generic, the game mechanics are quite unique and different from its predecessors. Yes, its still a survival game with a lot of gore, but the world setting, different powers, and how the events are set-up made the series better. It made me excited to watch the series every week.

Not only that, but the characters also shine in their own way. Their powers fit them really well, and most of them got a chance to show off. I especially like the best girl, Shuka’s powers. It’s one of those power that seemed simple, but if used smartly, it’s one of the best.

Darwin's game

I am not much of a fan the main character, Kaname’s power. His powers are similar to him, its boring. I guess his popularity with other characters because of his personality, but I don’t get it. Yeah, he’s good at surviving and leading, but he doesn’t stand out much in my eyes. Anyway, I do like his character development, it was a long time coming change of mindset.

Based on what I see from the anime, it’s clear that the story is a long way to go. We only got a glimpse of the enemy at the last episodes of the anime and the story starts to pick up the pace in the late latter half of the series. It would have been better if the series is a bit longer, at least give us more depth about the D-game and know more about why the antagonists made this game.

I do hope this gets a second season or else I will dig into the manga instead.

Before I end this review, I want to share my thoughts on this bad animation.

I am not a fan of art and animation. The character designs were too plain and the color palette is too bland. There were times the animation during the fight scenes look good, but ultimately, it’s bad. It made the anime a lot trashier.

It would have been better if the animation is good, at least. Such a shame.

Overall, Darwin’s Game is a good anime to watch and waste your time on. It’s not good but it’s very enjoyable.

I might dig into the manga sooner than later if ever I feel like it. But for now, watch the series guys.

Anyway, that is all for now.

This is Will Sirius and thanks for reading!
