Busou Renkin: After Thoughts
Yo!! Sirius here.
This will be a different kind of review, I guess. And its also a shorter one.
Compared to other animes I had watched over the past months, this is the first old anime I dropped in a while. Through this review, you’ll understand why I did it.
Synopsis: The story begins when high school student Kazuki Muto is killed one night saving a mysterious girl from a monster, only to wake up in his school dorm, believing it to have been a dream; however, he soon finds out that dream wasn’t a dream at all when a giant serpentine monster attacks him and his sister. Tokiko Tsumura, the girl he saved, explains that the monster is a homunculus. Kazuki had been attacked and killed by it when he was rescuing her; however, she, feeling responsible for him, revived him by placing a Kakugane medallion in his chest, serving as a replacement heart.
The Kakugane, as Tokiko explains, is an alchemical device that, when activated, takes a certain form based on the Kakugane’s user, forming a unique Buso Renkin. The Buso Renkin is the only thing that can destroy a homunculus monster. Using this, Kazuki creates his own Buso Renkin (the “Sunlight Heart,” a huge lance). Along with Tokiko and her own Buso Renkin (the “Valkyrie Skirt,” an execution scythe), Kazuki joins the fight against the homunculi and their master. (MAL)
Busou Renkin is an old anime I wish I never even gave a chance.
Okay, I had seen this anime before, I mean its first few episodes in an illegal streaming site. I thought the name of the anime seemed familiar so yeah. I tried it, watched it, not liked it.
Few years later, I got a copy of it. It has a dub version, so I tried it…maybe just maybe I might like it. But nope. I still hated it.
Why? Well, first things first.
I had seen alot of action shounen animes so I kinda know the cliches, tropes and flow of everything. But I never knew I would discover an anime that could be the worst of all. I knew from the get-go that this old anime would be generic as hell, but it would have been nice if they mixed abit of uniqueness and interesting elements at least to entertain me. Yes, me, the viewer. But no. Even the writing was bad. The jokes didn’t land on me, and I couldn’t like even one character.
Believe me when I say I see potential in its premise, but its still bad.
Next, is…the dubs were awful.
Okay, now this is just me being nitpicky. I first watched this one japanese dub. I couldn’t sit on it as I am not a fan of most of the performance of the VA’s. The dialogues definitely didn’t help at all. Then I tried the english dub, hoping it might be good and enjoyable (like other animes). It’s was another disappointment. Compared to the japanese counterpart, I don’t feel any passion or effort from the english voice actors. It’s like they were forced to voice this horrible characters. I don’t blame them though. And again, the dialogues sucks.
Another was it didn’t aged well.
Okay, I know I could have atleast be cautious that this anime would be garbage as no one is even talking about it and that this is an old anime. But I want to give all animes a try to see they might be a hidden gem. Definitely, this one is not.
I’m not sure if the anime is really bad bad or just it didn’t aged well. It’s outdatedness, especially in its art and animation is greatly outstanding. I cannot unsee the budget cuts and lame shots. Yes, the coloring and facial expression definitely reminds me of old animes, but I don’t see anything that could wow me with this anime.
Lastly, I just don’t like this anime.
Man, I know…this is a lame excuse but can you blame me. I watch for my enjoyment. This anime was bad. I knew that. Still I gave this one a try, still its bad. I couldn’t even reach halfway of it, it was that painful to watch. I just can’t take it anymore, so I dropped it.
That sure felt good.
Overall, this anime sucks. Don’t even try to watch it.
Anyway, that’s it for now. I think I shared my thoughts well.
Thanks for reading.
