Bungou Stray Dogs Movie – Dead Apple: After Thoughts
Just like NGNL, I am not much if a big fan of Bungou Stray Dogs. I don’t remember much about the anime but I do remember liking the story of the series and its art, but that’s just that. Still, it didn’t stop me from watching the movie.
I really liked the movie. It’s really good.
It’s been more than a year since I watched a Bungou Stray Dogs anime so I kinda forgot how the series ended. I barely remember the names of the characters except for Dazai (favorite character). Still, I was able to enjoy the movie. I also gain a lot of my memories and knowledge of the anime while watching the movie so atleast I’m in the loop. I’m not really sure if this movie is canon to the series, but it seems like it. It seemed to start after the events of the 2nd season, after all, I see Kyouko (BEST GURL) with the Armed Detective Agency peepz.
The story is really great. It’s very engaging and it progressed really well. Compared to the NGNL Zero movie I watched few days ago, Dead Apple is a lot more solid when it comes to pacing. I really liked how the story unfolds too. I didn’t expect that kind of twist. I mean, I really thought this movie would focus on Dazai cuz of the Intro of the movie, it turns out to be Atsushi. For the first time, since I start watching Bungou Stray Dogs, I now understand why Atsushi is the main character of this anime. LOL. I’ll explain more later. Let’s continue.
I really liked how this movie stayed true to what Bungou Stray Dogs is. Usually, the movie counterparts of the anime series tends to..uuhhh…be unique and it makes you question it’s connection to the anime series. The series didn’t forget to show us the Armed Detective Agency members and their awesomeness, and also the important supporting casts from the Mafia. To be honest, this movie made me want to watch the whole two seasons of the anime and then rewatch this one again. It’s that wholesome.
Now for the characters.
Atsushi. Oh boii I really don’t like him. Lol. I never liked him since the first episode of the anime. He’s annoying. He ‘kind of’ redeemed himself in the 2nd season, but it wasn’t enough for me to like him. Now, in this movie, I actually remembered why I don’t like him in the first place. He’s so so annoying and he looks like a chicken beside Kyouko during their fight scenes in the movie. He keeps on doubting himself and always afraid, oh my ghad I wanna spank him. Like I said above, I didn’t expect him to be the center of the story. The whole time you would only see him whining and almost hide behind Kyouko. But bruh, his sudden development is a long time coming. I always knew that he has some deep dark past, and I thought it will never be tackled cuz the series never discussed it more. Now knowing what happened to him, I now understand him. They sure took time to drop this info about Atsushi. His development was definitely amazing and touching to watch.
Compared to Atsushi, I had always liked Dazai Osamu. He is very smart and really mysterious. I just like him very much. Like I said above, I really thought this movie would focus more on Dazai, but it turns out to be not true. As always he continues to troll most of the people around him, not letting them know his true intentions. I think my only problem in this movie would be the lack of Dazai. He pretty much took the back seat on this movie even though he still did quite alot. Most of his efforts were behind the scenes, and that a bummer for me as his fan. At least I did get quite alot of screenshots of his HOTNESS. Ehem. Let’s move on.
The last character I wanna talk about would be Kyouko, the real MVP and BEST GURL of the movie. Damn. I love her. She was so BAD-ASS for a 14 y.o. girl. Damn. I really liked her fight scenes, showing that she can handle herself well even without her powers. I definitely alot of development from her since the 2nd season. She was able to overcome her struggle with accepting again her powers. Though it wasn’t as grandiose as Atsushi, it was still touching.
The rest of the characters were also amazing in their own right. They do what they usually do, being awesome. Though I do wanna give my two cents on Chuuya and Akutagawa. I didn’t expect Akutagawa to be part of Atsushi’s crew in the climax, but seeing them work together was so cool and cute. Frenemies as comrades. Ooohohohoho. Chuuya, on the other hand, I didn’t expect he was this powerful. He was so amazing in his fight. It was one of the best in this movie. I also liked the fact that he never doubted Dazai even for a moment. He knew that suicidal boi always have a plan, that’s why he can carelessly do whatever he wants. Damn, that’s friendship right there.
One of the best things in this movie would be the soundtrack. Oh my ghad. You hahave no idea how amazing it was to watch the movie in earphone/headphones. The bgm was undeniably good. It heightened my attention to the scenes in the movie. I especially love the music in the climax, it gave depth to the situation and feelings of all the characters in the scene. It was really amazing.
For the visuals, It was amazing. I always liked the art & animation of BSD. Seeing an upgraded version on it in the movie made me squeal like a kid. Everything was a spectacle, The fight scenes was really detailed, I was in awe the whole time watching. It would have been nice if I had seen this on cinema, I think my feels would be 3x bigger.
Overall, this movie was really good. I didn’t expect I would like it this much. It definitely make me want to see more of BSD. I need a 3rd season. PLEASE.
I totally recommend this movie to all the BSD fans. Its a must watch. If you haven’t seen Bungou Stray Dogs, then please do watch the first 2 seasons of it before watching this movie. That way you get to understand the movie and its important moments. 🙂
Anyway, that is all.
Thanks for reading!!
