Black Cat Anime Review
Spread the love

Yo! This is an old anime that I enjoyed watching when I was young. I recently rewatched it cuz I forgot how the series ended. My memory failed me yet again. This anime series definitely brought me back/made me remember the old times where I watch anime on tv in the afternoon or on weekends, and was dubbed in my country’s language. Fun times.

Anyway, here is my review.

Completing every job with ruthless accuracy, Train Heartnet is an infamous assassin with no regard for human life. Donning the moniker “Black Cat” in the underground world, the elite killer works for the powerful secret organization known only as Chronos.

One gloomy night, the blasé gunman stumbles upon Saya Minatsuki, an enigmatic bounty hunter, and soon develops an odd friendship with her. Influenced by Saya’s positive outlook on life, Train begins to rethink his life. Deciding to abandon his role as the Black Cat, he instead opts to head down a virtuous path as an honest bounty hunter. However, Chronos—and particularly Creed Diskenth, Train’s possessive underling—is not impressed with Train’s sudden change of heart and vows to resort to extreme measures in order to bring back the emissary of bad luck.

This assassin turned “stray cat” can only wander so far before the deafening sound of gunfire rings out. (MAL)

My Thoughts:

hhhmmmm…How to start this review? Ah! yes.

This anime was a disappointment.

Was that too harsh? Well, it can’t be helped. Its the truth. It made me question why I enjoyed this show when I was young. Lol. Maybe at that time, I wasn’t that conscious about the story, and I was into the visuals and the fact that I find Train really really attractive. Indeed, I was young back then. Hahahahah.

Before we dive into the negative aspect of the series, let’s mention first the positive ones, at least I was able to get some.

I really really like the premise, and the initial direction of the series. It was dark, mysterious, but not scary and had some light comedy undertone. It was visually appealing too. The characters were really likable too. Even the villains, I rooted for them. I also love how they nonchalantly kill the best girl so early in the series. (Yes, Saya is best girl. Fight me.) It just shows that this series would go really dark and violent when it wanted to, but for some point, it went on the other direction.

It all started around episode 8, I think, round the time when Train decided to live his live as a ‘stray cat’ instead as an assassin. For some point, the series switched focus. It was from dark, mysterious with action to typical adventure action comedy. Yes, everyone, this anime became generic. Sigh. Why!?!? WHY!?!?  Why did it happen!?!?! It was supposed to be dark!! I want it to go darker, hell yeah, I would even like it if they also put some dark comedy to it. But nah, they prefer to go to the generic route. Like I said, a disappointment.

I do admit, I haven’t read the manga yet, so I can’t really judge it well. I can only judge the anime presented to me. It was a wasted material. Sigh.

Overall, the series is average. You can easily binge-watched it if you like. There is an available english dub (if you want) and sub. The dub was done well, so I could say I recommend it more cuz I find it more funny.

Anyway, that’s it for today.

Thanks for reading.

  1. This anime is definitely one that starts cool and gets progressively less interesting. I still quite enjoy it but there’s no doubt the strong start is the best the show has to offer.
