Okay, what is going on??

Why is this series, Black Butler S2, even exist? I mean, have you guys seen the season 1 ending? That was already epic and the right ending! Why extend an already finished series? To milk out its popularity? I think so. Sigh…I think that is the only reason why they did this.

It’s a bummer, but what’s done is done. They made season 2. I watched it. Now hear my thoughts about it.

Kidnapped and forced into slavery at a young age, he was eventually rescued and returned home, only to have his beloved father pass away soon after.
However, there are certain individuals who doubt Alois’ story and legitimacy. And rightfully so, because things in the Trancy household are not as they appear, starting with Alois’ black-clad butler with supernatural abilities, Claude Faustus. Who exactly is the mysterious Claude, and what connection does he have with Alois?
Amid the web of lies and deceit running rampant in the mansion, the bond between Alois and Claude will be tested as hell itself arrives at their doorstep. (MAL)

Black Butler Season 2 was…interestingly weird. The whole plot of Black Butler concluded in the previous season, so this new season felt like a “what if”, in other words, like a fan-made story out of the original. It’s not that bad, its just…weird.

The story felt to be a bit of “too good to be true”. The setting was similar to the first season, but also different. The writing was also consistent, alot more interesting and alot more solid compared to the first season, but its not Black Butler. It’s pretty much a knock-off, and a damn good one. It tried to tell new stories and at the same time, maintaining the formula of what Black Butler was, while also carefully connecting the two seasons together. The director and scriptwriters sure did put alot of effort and thoughts in creating this new season, and I commend them for that. But yeah, it lacked alot to be called a legit sequel to Black Butler.

One of the reasons I’m not much of a fan of this season was the new characters. It’s clear as day that they were created to be really similar to the main characters on face value. The differences between the two would be the likeability of the characters itself. The new characters were horribly written, as if they were written to make sure the original casts looked alot better than them.

I think my only silverlining here would be the original supporting characters. I always enjoyed their presence in the first season, so seeing them again in this new one was really nice. I do wish they were more of use like in the first season. Here, they had alot of moments in the first half, but pretty much forgotten in the latter. Such a shame.

The art and animation in this new season was in some ways on par with the original series. I wasn’t in awe with anything I see, after all, theres nothing new about it. Ah! I do like the designs of the new characters. Yeah, I think thats all.

Overall, this series was…okay. It did entertain me alot like the first season, but yeah, I can’t really see this one as a sequel.

That is all.
Thanks for reading.

  1. I like to pretend season 2 doesn’t exist, but Irina quite enjoyed it (we actually debated the issue at one point just for fun but I don’t think we resolved anything). That said, I really like the ‘Book of’ sequels that take place during the time line of the first season. They’ve been really good so far.

    • Oooohhhh… I might check out those ‘Book of’ sequels soon. I was about to question their relevance to the main series, but good thing u mentioned the connection ooohohohhoho.
Now I’m excited to watch them. 😄

      • I absolutely loved Book of Circus. It really is just like a side story that fits in amongst the many arcs of season one but the characters they introduced during it are great. Book of Murder is obviously much shorter but tells a pretty compelling story and again, I really enjoyed it though I kind of wanted more as it just kind of felt like a movie length episode. And of course, I’ve got Book of Atlantic sitting in my post Christmas to be watched DVD pile and I’m really looking forward to it.
