Another anime review about Another | Halloween Special

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Welcome to my latest Halloween Special entry where I talk about a Another, a horror anime.

Out of all the animes I had seen, this is the creepiest. From start to finish, the scary atmosphere never left. And bruh, that is a good thing because I always thought I would never get scared or creeped out by any anime and this one was the legit first.

In 1972, a popular student in Yomiyama North Middle School’s class 3-3 named Misaki passed away during the school year. Since then, the town of Yomiyama has been shrouded by a fearful atmosphere, from the dark secrets hidden deep within.

Twenty-six years later, 15-year-old Kouichi Sakakibara transfers into class 3-3 of Yomiyama North and soon after discovers that a strange, gloomy mood seems to hang over all the students. He also finds himself drawn to the mysterious, eyepatch-wearing student Mei Misaki; however, the rest of the class and the teachers seem to treat her like she doesn’t exist. Paying no heed to warnings from everyone including Mei herself, Kouichi begins to get closer not only to her, but also to the truth behind the gruesome phenomenon plaguing class 3-3 of Yomiyama North.

Another follows Kouichi, Mei, and their classmates as they are pulled into the enigma surrounding a series of inevitable, tragic events—but unraveling the horror of Yomiyama may just cost them the ultimate price. (MAL)

I had always thought that it would be impossible to enjoy any horror anime as they usually end up to be cringey and lame.

Infairness, Another wasn’t like that.

Creepy Story

One of the formula in making a good horror show would be a good story, this series has it. Yes, at first glance, the premise looks so typical, but along with other factors like music, atmosphere and execution, it made the story really intriguing and very interesting. The story wasn’t only horrifying, it was also full of mystery and very suspenseful.

However, it’s not perfect. Everything was stable, storywise, until the ending, specifically the ending. I like how the series ended, but the plotwist felt out of nowhere. Yeah, it was supposed to shock us, but the clues presented to us in previous episodes felt lacking.

I also don’t like how they went supernatural with Misaki Mei’s eye. I know they need a possible reason to identify the enemy, but the one chose was a bit…cheesy and force. It would have been nice if they use a different tactic in identifying the odd one out.

That’s just my tea, though. If I don’t think much about it then I can pretty much accept everything thrown at me by the series. Lol.

Scary Atmosphere

One of the driving force of this series would be its established scary atmosphere. Not only it set the tone of the series, but it was also consistent until the very end. From its cinematography to how the characters act with each other, it legit scared me. It made don’t want to even try to live or visit in their place.

Intriguing Characters

One of the things I like about this series was the characters as they were hella mysterious and intriguing. The prime example to this would be Misaki Mei. Yes, we were able to know more about her life, but I really like how she still maintained her mysterious feel until the very end.

The supporting characters were also memorable in their own way, though not much.

P.A.Works’ Animation

If I remember correctly, Another anime is one of the early works of P.A. Works. From the art of the series, I can really say that the studio came a long way, indeed. Another had the distinct art of the studio but not as polished as their new ones. Even the animation sequence on some scenes seemed off, but bearable to watch.

Still, this series is definitely holding up.

I really like this series. Everything were done right, with few problems. This definitely gave me hope that animes could pull off horror series too.

This is a definite recommendation to watch in this time of season. You won’t regret it.
