Today is the first day of the annual 12 Days of Anime.
Yyaaaayyyy!! I’m actually doing this. Hahahahhaha!!
Anyway, yes, I am literally doing this event.
To start everything off, let’s looks back to this year’s, 2019, anime releases.
I admit, I wasn’t able to watch a lot of animes that were released this year. Yes, I tried to watch them but yeah, my personal issues got in the way and ruin my watching time. But that doesn’t mean I don’t have an idea what animes that were shining really bright this year.
For my first entry here in 12 Days of Anime, I will be sharing my thoughts unto which animes that were the best this year.
Note that everything I’m about to say are all my opinion and is very biased so take it with a grain of salt. Okay? Okay.
Let’s move on.
The first animes that blew me away this year were of course the talked about animes from the Winter season. Those animes were: The Promised Neverland, The Shield Hero, Kaguya-sama Love is War, Dororo, and The Quintessential Quintuplets.
Out of all the seasons this year, I really enjoyed the Winter season as the animes released were really diverse and some were my personal favorites. I especially adore Kaguya-sama and the Quintuplets the most, but The Shield Hero definitely made me want to watch the series weekly. The promised neverland was indeed a good series but after its 2nd episode, I never got a chance to watch it again. I’m not really sure what happened but I think I got put off by how it was handled I guess. It’s just me being nitpicky. Dororo was a special surprise as I didn’t expect I would love it.
The animes mentioned above were not the only animes I watched as I also enjoyed watching the Boogiepop 2019 and Watashi ni Tenshi ga Maiorita. Unfortunately, I haven’t finished them yet, along with the 2nd cour of the Shield Hero and Dororo.
For the Spring, well…I wasn’t paying attention much to this.
It was around that time when I was still adjusting my time table as I just had work. However, I still keep my radar as open as possible to know which animes that were notable. From what I gathered that season, the animes that standout were Kimetsu no Yaiba, Attack on Titan 3B, One Punch Man, and Fruits Basket.
Well we all know that OPM and AoT would definitely cause alot of buzz as they are household names already. I was disappointed by Bungou Stray Dogs 3 as not much people were talking about it. I thought that the new season of BSD must be bad of something, but my friends told me that the season was really good, just not hyped as much as others.
Both Kimetsu no Yaiba and Fruit Basket (2019) were the animes that really standout along with the powerhouse animes. They seemed to left a huge impact to anime fans, especially Kimetsu no Yaiba, that everyone is still talking about the series even until now. I mean, most of the merchs I saw in an anime convention were full on KnY. Damn, the hype was real. It was like a SAO or AOT all over again. Hahahhaha.
Other than the animes I mentioned above, there were also some interesting animes that caught my eye. They were Kenja no Mago, Bokutachi wa Benkyou ga Dekinai, Carole and Tuesday, and Fairy Gone. I dunno if they are good or even above average, all I know is that I find them very interesting.
Trivia though, I already read the manga a bit of Kenja no Mago and Bokutachi wa Benkyou ga Dekinai. Because of this, I kinda have an idea WTF happened in the series. This convinced me to put them on the side for awhile.
Next is Summer.
Oh man, this season was amazing. Just like the Winter season, it was full of diverse animes. However, I wasn’t able to watch much this season just like the previous season as I focused more on watching animes from my backlog.
Anyway, what were the anime standouts for this season? Number 1 would definitely be Araburu Kisetsu no Otome-domo yo.
Before the season even started, Digibro, a famous anituber on Youtube, gave his thoughts about the manga of the same series. It was through that I learnt about its existence. I checked the manga out and damn, its so good. But yeah, I haven’t seen its anime counterpart, but I know its something I need to watch soon.
Another standout anime for the Summer season would be of course Dr. Stone. I had heard about this series even before its anime adaption announcement as this series recently because one of the most popular series on Shounen Jump. Along with the promised neverland, dr. stone was making a lot of waves in Japan. But I never got a chance to check out its source material, hence me pretty much impressed by its premise after seeing the first few episodes of it. It’s still ongoing now, but I know I need to binge this one soon.
The other animes that took my attention were Fire Force, Danmachi 2, Vinlad Saga, Kanata no Astra, Accelerator, and Lord El-Melloi. If there’s something common with these animes that would be me not even watching at least 1 episode of them. Heh. But at least they are on my radar.
Now for the latest season, Fall, there were a lot of silent killers here.
Compared to the other seasons, a lot of the animes this season were taken forgotten only to turn out to be great. Yes, this season has powerhouse SAO Alicization, 7 deadly sins, Food wars, Psycho Pass 3 and the latest season of My Hero Academia, but they seemed to be overthrowned by the new animes.
The animes that were huge standouts were Oresuki, Shinchou Yuusha, & Beastars.
Oresuki was something I didn’t expect I would like, after seeing its first episode. The premise was something new and it made me very interested with it. Though I do feel like its hype died down compared to the other two animes.
Shinchou Yuusha is the most popular new anime as of the moment, because of the meme-able facial expressions and funny as hell story. The first episode definitely left me wanting more and i really do understand my people are enjoying this one.
Beastars, on the other hand, I haven’t watched yet. RIP me. I skipped this after seeing that this would be a 3D animated series. A lot of people keep on mentioning how amazing this was so…I got interested. Lol. I’ll definitely check this one out soon.
There’s also other animes released this Fall season that got my attention. They are not really amazing but they are my jam: Assassin’s Pride, No Guns Life, Babylon, Ahiru no SOra, Hoshiai no SOra, & Kabukichou Sherlock. I will check them out soon…maybe next year…I dunno…but I know I will.
After making this entry I just realized that there’s alot of animes released this year. And a lot of good ones too.
However, there are still new animes to look into, especially on Netflix. The best one yet is Aggretsuko S2. This series left me to an existential crisis for a minute. It was that good.
The other Netflix animes were…uhhh..not worthy to talk about. I’ll just share my thoughts about it in another entry.
As this entry is about the best anime of 2019, I think I should choose at least 1 anime and label that as THE BEST this year.
If I were to choose one then I guess it would be Kaguya-sama Love is War. Why? Well, I am very biased about this and I had been loving this series for few years now and with a really good anime adaptation, I am very delighted as a fan. Heh. Maybe if I would watch the other standouts of this year then I might change my mind. But for now, its Kaguya-sama Love is War.
I guess, that’s it for the first entry. Damn, this was longer than I expect it to be.
I hope you guys would continue to stay tuned for the upcoming entries for the 12 Days of Anime, 2019 edition in the next couple of days.
This has been Will Sirius, THANKS FOR READING!!
